With the variety on wood frame structures of Ruong house in Central part of Vietnam, some ancient houses in Quang Nam provine has preserved the cultural beauties, enriched the national architectural heritages.
Thatched roof house is a kind of Ruong house which has two roofs, one is made of soil and another is woven by reeds; this is the pride of Binh Dinh people. However, whether there is this kind of house in Quang Nam or not? Certainly, the answer is “yes”. Most of upland areas in Tien Phuoc district have thatched roof houses, and the house of Huynh Thuc Khang – a strong – willed scholar in Tien Canh cummune before 1940 is a case in point. Further more, farmers in Binh Lanh commune, Thang Binh district also used to build the rice storing warehouses which have roofs consisted of 2 layers - the soil layer is under the reed one; this roof type is used for preventing fire.
There are many kinds of house such as: house consisting of 1 compartments and 2 lean-tos (or 4-wood house), house consisting of 3 compartments and 2 lean-tos (8-wood house), house consisting of 3 compartments and 2 double lean-tos (people usually mistake this for 5-compartment house), or house consisting of 3 compartments and 4 low lean-tos (having lines of column in front of 4 house corridors). There are 2 types of truss structure: continuous truss and overlapped truss (three section truss, two section truss). The forms of linking truss and the horizontal beam which connecting the front main column to behind main column, as well as holding up the roof-top include straight horizontal beam, horizontal beam curved in its 2 heads, horizontal beam having jack … People also reduce the number of columns to widen their house spaces.
